Halloween 2011

Just got home from Trick or Treating Halloween 2011. Emily was Cinderella, Roxy was a bunny, and JP was a little monkey! They all had a blast! We visited Papa Page and Aunt Tiffanie first. We ate McDonalds for dinner there, mommy just really didn't feel like cooking :) Then we headed over to Grandma and Grandpa Roseno's house where we also met up with Amanda and Deanna. We did lots of Trick or Treating! Both Emily and Roxy came home with bags full of candy! After Trick or Treating was over we headed back to Papa Page's house because Grandma Lori was home from work and she wanted to see how cute the kids were too. Mommy got way into the Chargers came so we stayed there until it was over (we lost by the way). All in all it was a fun night. Daddy called while we were out trick or treating so we got to tell him what fun we were having. Happy Halloween Everyone!

Emily is now 5! I can't believe it has been 5 years since my baby girl came into my life. I can't believe I have been a mother for 5 years. This day brings so many emotions! I remember being so scared that first week I brought her home from the hospital wondering how to be a mom. I even remember wondering where the "this is how to be a parent to Emily" manual was. I couldn't have asked for a better daughter. Emily has brought so much joy to my life. She is one of my reasons to live and breath each day. Her childish behaviors and getting to see things through her keep me motivated each day. This year has been so difficult without my husband being her and every time I feel lonely I have always had my Emily to cheer me up! She cuddles up with me on the couch at night, sometimes early in the morning, she's my little best friend. I am so proud of her. Watching her grow for the last 5 years has been the best experience of my life and I wouldn't change a second of it. I am blessed that God choose me for her mommy. Happy Birthday Emily! Daddy Joe, Mommy, Roxy and JP love you so much and we are so proud of you! Always keep that beautiful smile.

Many of you have been asking me about Joe so I figured it was time to update you. He has been busy since he returned to Afghanistan in July. The first few weeks he was back he stayed in Orgun-e but it wasn't too long before they sent him on another mission. He was on the mission for a few weeks and has since returned to Orgun-e. Joe is getting anxious to come home and stay for a while. We've been sending him as many pictures as possible. We're all excited to be counting down to his return. The unit has asked to begin refraining from sending packages because they are afraid they may not arrive before the guys move forward. I will update you more on his return time when I know more and when I can say more. We look forward to being together as a family again and I know Joe looks forward to visiting and spending time with all of you. He is greatful for all the family and friends that have supported him, and us throughout this year. It has definitely been a trying year but we know our relationship and our family is only stronger because of it! I don't know about you but I am so excited to soon be welcoming home my husband!

Well, Joe has been gone for about 10 months. The kids and I thought that since he can't be here to celebrate his 25th birthday with us that we would make a cake and celebrate him anyways.

Well, it happened.... the first day of Kindergarten! I can't believe my oldest baby is big enough to start Kindergarten. She was so excited all morning. Her class doesn't start until 11:45am but she was dressed and ready to go by 9:00am! I am so proud of the little girl she is growing into! I did a great job holding back my tears until I walked out of her classroom! I feel like any other mom I think, wish I could watch her all day and make sure all the kids are nice and play with her. I can also only do now what every other mom does... hope and pray she has a great day and loves school and all her new friends. I can't wait to see her little face when I pick her up and get to hear all about what she did today! I am so blessed to be Emily's mommy!

First off, we owe the USO in Dallas/Fort Worth a big THANK YOU! After the completion of Joe's R&R his first stop after leaving Fresno was Dallas. The people from the USO let Joe pick out 3 books, Cinderella for Emily, The Little Mermaid for Roxy, and Eyes and Nose Fingers and Toes for J.P. Not only did they mail the books home to us but they also recorded Joe reading the books on DVD. It is the best present we could have asked for!

Included in the package was a book called Hero Dad. It reminds us of all the things our daddy does here and overseas. He is our hero and we miss him so much! But like the book says, "Sometimes he has to go away for long trips, but that's what superheros have to do."

Thank you Daddy! We love and miss you so much!!!

Happy 4th of July!!!!! We were so lucky to have Daddy home in time to celebrate the 4th with us at Pismo Beach. We were also lucky enough that Mommy was feeling good enough to go after only having JP 10 days earlier! It was so much fun. We spent a few nights at the Edgewater in Pismo with the family! TAG Symposium on Family Readiness

San Diego, CA

May 19-22, 2011

The Adjutant General hosted the annual Symposium on Family Readiness on 19-22 May 2011 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. The symposium is designed for Commanders, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers, Family Readiness Group Volunteers and all California National Guard members. The training and seminars during the symposium were focused on developing the skills and resiliency that will benefit Service Members and Families alike. I didn't get many pictures at the actual event however I took my little sister along and was able to get some pictures from the Padres Game we went to and other stuff we did around San Diego and our hotel.

"To those who are worried because you have not heard from your Soldiers in 3rd Plt...everyone has been working hard somewhere where there is no internet. Soon you will start hearing from them again, hang in there... They are all safe and sound!"

Family and Friends

We are another month closer to being home with our loved ones and we have hit the half way mark in our deployment. This past month the soldiers of 3rd Platoon have been extremely busy working and improving the area that we are assigned. The weather is getting warmer which means it is time to build. 3rd Platoon is being noticed for our efforts up at the 101st Division level. Everyone in this area knows who we are and have good things to say. All the Soldiers in the platoon are working hard but can’t wait for the day to go home. I know myself and my Soldiers love getting mail from their friends and families so please keeps send packages and letters to your Soldier. I also want to say that 3rd Platoon has been extremely busy and are in locations for weeks on end with no type of communications to make calls or send emails home. If you don’t hear from them for a few weeks don’t panic we are most likely in a location where there is no communication and as soon as we get to location with a way to call home your loved one will. Until next month take care and thank you for all of the support you are and have given 3rd Platoon.

Yummy, if you're wondering yes that is Teppanyaki that we had for dinner at Tokyo Steakhouse! I was blessed to celebrate my anniversary with friends and family. I had my sister Tiffanie and Jenna there, along with my friends Crystal, Mike and Danielle! We had a great time! I wish my husband could have been there to celebrate! I know he would have enjoyed it although I probably wouldn't have had so many leftovers :) Whatever you were doing on our anniversary honey just know I love you and miss you.I thought about you all day and I spent the day exactly like you told me to. I had a great time with family and friends and we talked about you a lot!

I can't wait till next year when we can be together for it!

What a super fun day Mother's Day was! I was worried that I was going to be bummed all day because my hubby is so far away but my friends and family really stepped in to make it a nice day. Unfortunately I didn't get to do much with Emily because she was sick and her asthma was acting up so we have some special time planned together next week to celebrate! I spent the morning watching movies with the girls, the afternoon at the baseball game with my little Roxy and the evening at my moms celebrating what a great mama I have!

EMILY'S SWIMMING AWARD

When Emily started swimming at Swim America she was scared to even get into the pool let alone put her face under the water. She is now blowing bubbles, going under the water to get rings and playing games in the pool. She earned her first award yesterday for accomplishing all these things. She also started going down the water slide at swim school. I am very proud of her!

I am so proud of my baby girl! Yesterday was Emily's 7th Swim Lesson and she put her head under the water all by herself! I even caught it on video! It happens about a minute into the video, but watch the whole thing! She is doing soooo good!!

If she makes it through the whole lesson next week with no crying and she puts her head under the water again all by herself she'll get a medal! Yay! I can't wait for next week! I'm so proud of her!

The Medrano Family Fun

Morning: Wake up and see the Easter Baskets the Easter Bunny brought! Right after, have Papa Page and Aunt Tiffanie over for a pancake breakfast! It was yummy too! In the middle of all this we got a call from Daddy! The kids and mommy were so happy to talk to him (there's a really cute picture of Roxy talking to him!) Then, Emily colors Easter eggs with Papa while mommy takes care of fussy Roxy.

Afternoon/Early Evening: Go to Grandma and Grandpa Roseno's house. Eat a very delicious lunch (Tri-Tip and lots of other yummy stuff). Let the kids hunt Easter eggs! Roxy got to find Easter eggs for the first time this year. Her sissy even helped her!

All together we had such a great time! The kids really enjoyed eating candy and playing with family and friends. We got to spend it together and even got a little video of Roxy and her Easter eggs for daddy!

Happy Easter Daddy!

As I'm sure most everyone is well aware, Easter is quickly approaching us! This year will be bitter sweet. I think it's the first year that both Emily and Roxy are going to have a lot of fun coloring eggs, going on egg hunts, getting dressed up and beautiful to go to church, and just enjoying the day together. Of course it will feel a little empty as daddy will still be in Afghanistan that day. A few weeks ago, we sent Daddy a Happy Easter 'box' or as we like to call it his 'Easter Basket.' We had fun picking out candy for it and making Cake in a Jar! Here are a few pictures I took before sending the package off. Daddy should be getting it any day now!

It's so nice having some sun! The kids love being outside.Every time I see them playing together I am reminded how fast they grow. I feel so blessed to have the most beautiful daughters in the world! I can't wait to include Baby Joe and Hubby Joe in the fun soon!

Emily's Star Chart and Family Update

Emily has been doing really well listening to me at bed time lately! Thank goodness because I may have started going crazy :) She has done so well that today I decided to try something new with her. We started an "Emily's Star Chart." There is a list of 5 different chores/good behavior things listed on the chart. Once Emily gets 15 stars, that means she's done that thing 15 times, she gets a reward. She picked the reward for each category. For two of the rewards she put she wanted a trip to the park, two other rewards were getting to buy a new toy, and the last reward was getting candy. Here are some pictures of her Star Chart.

In other news LOL... I went to get gas in my car this week and this is what I experienced... It didn't actually fill my car with gas, the pump just stops at $75.00.

Lastly, I was in the hospital this week because baby Joe was trying to work his way out of my tummy all on his own. I went in to Clovis Community and I was having contractions but nothing that was consistent enough to be worried about it. I took a few pictures while I was there.

If I don't look happy in the picture, it's not that I wasn't doing okay but I kept hearing babies being born and even their first cries. It made me miss my husband a lot and I just laid there praying that he will make it home in time for JP's entrance. Those are the precious moments you can never get back. I still remember hearing the first cries of both Emily and Roxy. I love my baby girls and I can't wait to meet my first, and only :), baby boy!

Oh, one more thing... I haven't really posted any pictures of my belly so here is one for daddy to see. I am about 7 months pregnant in it.

Hopefully I can update everyone on Joe soon. All I know right now is that he has been working really hard on a few missions. He has experienced some back pain and pain in his ankle so keep him in your prayers. He loves his job and he is a hard worker but he is definitely missing his family and friends. He should be home for JP's arrival (crossed fingers), but we are all looking forward to seeing each other.

BEAUTIFUL BACKYARD

I'd love to say that I've been working my buns off to make sure the backyard looks this beautiful but that would be a lie. I was talking to Joe about how I wished the backyard was all beautiful since summertime was approaching and he told me I could hire a lawn care service! Woohoo, didn't take me long! I hired Del Toro & Sons in Fresno and they made my backyard gorgeous! Next step for backyard make over is to get a swing set and some patio furniture! I am excited for Summer Time!!!!!!!

Military pay hangs in the balance in government shutdown negotiations

As Congress continues to wrangle over its budget bill and attempts to avert a government shutdown, full and timely military pay hangs in the balance -- and Republicans are faulting Democrats for allowing that risk.

Much like the debate over Planned Parenthood funding, military pay has given Washington politicians a simple issue that resonates with voters that they can use to cast their opponents as irresponsible and unwilling to negotiate. While it has mostly been Republicans who have seized the issue of military pay in the budget debate, some Democrats have in turn accused the GOP of turning their backs on the troops.

If Congress today fails to pass a budget for the next six months, the federal government will in part shut down at midnight tonight.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates told troops in Iraq this week that their paychecks would be delayed if the government shuts down.

"First of all, let me say you will be paid," he said. "As a historian it always occurred to me the smart thing for government was always to pay the guys with guns first. But in all seriousness, based on some stuff I read this morning, if the government shuts down starts on the 8th and goes for a week, you'd get a half a check. If it goes from the 15th to the 30th, you wouldn't get a pay check on the 30th but you would be back paid for all of it."

He added, "Frankly, I remember when I was your age, I did a lot of living from pay check to pay check, and so I hope this thing doesn't happen because I know it will be an inconvenience for a lot of troops."

With negotiations apparently stalemated, the GOP-led House on Thursday passed a third short-term spending measure to keep the government operating for another week -- while cutting an additional $12 billion from this fiscal year's budget. Along with a controversial measure regarding abortion funding in the District of Columbia, the measure included funding for the Pentagon for the rest of the fiscal year -- thus giving Republicans the opportunity to dub the bill a "troop funding bill."

"I think the Senate should follow the House lead and pass the troop funding bill and do it today," House Speaker John Boehner said to reporters late Friday morning. "I also believe the president should sign the troop funding bill into law. This is the responsible thing to do support our troops and to keep our federal government open."

President Obama has threatened to veto the bill, if it ever made it past the Senate, because of the abortion provision. The administration said Mr. Obama would be willing to sign a "clean" short-term budget extension bill "if negotiations are making significant progress."

The veto threat has prompted Republican politicians to criticize Democrats for threatening the troops. Former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin wrote in a Facebook note today, "Why would [Mr. Obama] play politics at the expense of our troops who are putting everything on the line to protect us? Memo to the President: I doubt the insurgents will stop and wait for a government shutdown to end before resuming actions. You need to fund our troops, sir."

Democrats have decried the GOP criticisms as a cynical ploy, saying that the Democratic party has shown more actual support for the troops.

"For them to hide behind our troops while they build a future unworthy of the sacrifice of our troops... is a contradiction in terms," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. She said Democrats opposed the short-term spending bill "because it's not the right path to do for our economy and for our troops and for the strength of our country... both militarily and economically."

"We are the ones who have supported our troops all along," Pelosi continued. "We've done more for our men and women in uniform and when they come home as veterans than has been done in the history of our country. All of that with a great deal of Republican opposition."

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have pursued standalone measures to protect troop pay -- legislation not tied to the controversial budget debate.

Democratic Rep. Bill Owens of New York contends that while the one-week spending measure the House passed Thursday funds the Pentagon, it does not ensure timely pay for soldiers or their on-base families. He put forward a measure yesterday that would have ensured soldiers were paid, but it failed along party lines, with just one Republican joining Democrats to support the measure.

In the Senate, Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas says she has gathered at least 60 members in support of her bill, the Ensuring Pay for Our Military Act. That same legislation was introduced in the House by Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, but Republican leadership has not put it up for a vote.

As Tea Party freshman Rep. Allen West pointed out yesterday, if Republicans are so concerned about funding the troops, they should support a standalone measure to ensure they're paid. West said he was "disgusted at the perception that Leaders in my own Party...are now using the men and women in uniform" to pass a short-term budget bill.

Emily's 1st Day of Swim Lessons

Today, Emily started swimming lessons! She was quick to get in the pool but a little scared when they started to teach her breathing. She thought they were going to make her go under the water. They didn't and she had a blast. She learned how to blow bubbles in the water with her mouth and to float on her back (of course with Coach Suzy's help). Emily is very excited for next to week to come already!

Also, before her swim class she got to do an hour of gymnastics! I also had fun taking pictures of that! It was good to see her run around and use some of her energy in a healthy way! I think I'm just as excited to take her next week as she is excited to go!

Roxy and Mommy's Day Trip to Sacramento

for St. Patty's Day

Roxy and Mommy woke up and decided to take a trip to Sacramento to visit Ashley and her son Gavin. Ashley is the girlfriend to one of the soldiers deployed with Joe. We spent the afternoon at the Sacramento zoo showing the kids all the animals! They had a blast. After zoo time we headed to Ashley's house for dinner and play time. It was St. Patty's Day, hints all the green! We had enchiladas, beans, and the best rice I've ever tasted for dinner! Thank goodness Ashley is an amazing cook! Then it was off on another journey back home for Roxy and me.Thanks for everything Ashley. It was much better then being alone on a holiday.

Have you ever heard the question would you rather not brush your teeth for a month or not shower for a month? In Joe's situation, he didn't get to make the choice. He was on a mission for the last month and had no shower! Today, he finally got to shower! It made my day to see my husband happy, clean, and smiling! Another Week in The Medrano House

Saturday, February 19, started out with a trip to Grandpa and Grandma Roseno's house. We had biscuits and gravey (not the way my Grandma Merrill use to make them but they were still good). Roxy loved helping Grandpa make breakfast. She wanted to watch the whole time!

After breakfast, Grandpa Roseno made his morning milkshake and Roxy couldn't stay away from it! It made a great big mess on her face but she loved every minute of it!

Later in the week it was Emily's turn for a "make over" day! We went to see Amanda at her school, Milan and Emily got a manicure and a pedicure! She loves getting her nails painted and she wanted to take lots of pictures to show daddy!

Well, after having biscuits and gravey at the grandparents this last weekend Emily decided she REALLY liked it and wanted to help me make some this morning. We got out the stuff and away we went! UPDATE:

I know it has been awhile since I have updated the blog on Joe but because he has been out on a mission with very little Internet access I have not been able to get any pictures of him in a long time! He is doing well. I took these pictures of him through Skype this morning. It was the first time that we were able to Skype in a few weeks. Our conversation was only about 2 minutes long but it was nice to be able to see him and know he is doing well. He's getting skinny! If you haven't already, send him some care packages full of junk food! The girls and I miss him a lot and can't wait to see him in a few months when he comes home for R&R. If everything works out he should be here for the birth of J.P.

Valentine's Day 2011

I can't say it was everything I ever wanted it to be considering my husband and I are over 7,000 miles away from each other, but the surprises he sent to me today definitely put a smile on my face! I left to run some errands and when I got back there was a pink teddy bear, a beautiful arrangement of flowers, and a red heart necklace on my front door step. I feel truly blessed to have such a special man in my life!

This is a great park! They have a whole lot there! The best part is that during the hot months, they have running water to play in! Last year, Emily had so much fun splashing around that she was soaking wet from head to toe when we got in the car to leave. Although it's sunny and beautiful outside right now it's not hot enough for the water playtime yet. I'm sure we will be enjoying that before we know it though. Last year, Joe and I took the kids just to get out of the house one day and we spent hours with them swinging and feeding the ducks. I'm sure the girls and I will spend lots of time playing at this park again this year.

Perceptions Made Right

We should be willing to live our lives for ourselves. Speaking out for what we believe and standing up for what we do not. We should accept the world for what it is, knowing that we might not be able to change it. Don't be afraid of your voice but be willing to express it without hesitation. If you repress something it will only lead to resentment.

Don't ever let anyone bring you down in words or actions, all the same they are not worth your time in this life. All to often we are hard enough on ourselves, that we do not need someone else weighing us down further. We must always remember we cannot change someone, they must change themselves and that we all live in some sort of denial.

Be strong willed, devoted and passionate about something...not always someone. Do not rush into anything...especially love, because you may find that you've missed out on you. Take time to find yourself, to know what you want, expect, need, and know.

Love everyone, even the people you dislike. It is not your place to judge them, yet we do. Do things because YOU believe in them and respect others no matter what. If you work, work hard. Find something to have faith in. Do not be trusting of others but be trusting in yourself. Do not let anyone ever tell you that you are less than what you think you are, even the smallest part of being degraded can rip you apart.

Give your all knowing you may not get anything back in return. Help someone fighting a harder battle and fight your own tell you have nothing left. Finally repent, but don't regret the things you've done because they have made you who you are and what's done is done. What beautiful children we have! I can't wait to see what our little man is going to look like when he is born in June or July! It was fun taking my girls to the studio today for pictures. Snowing in Afghanistan!

So much for going to Afghanistan to get away from the snow! Joe said it has been snowing like crazy!Everyone is doing well. Yay! First Care Package...

IT'S A BOY!!!!

Yesterday we found out baby #3 is a boy! Joseph Paul Anthony Medrano Jr. We are so excited to meet him. They have changed my due date a thousand times but it is somewhere between June 29th and July 7th. I think it will be closer to June 29th considering my babies are usually born 3 weeks early anyway. Both Joe and I are so excited to meet our coming son and Roxy and Emily are excited to meet there brother. I also registered at Target! You can find us by looking under Joe or my name.

Joe Update: He is doing well, settling into his home away from home. The girls and I miss him like crazy but communication has been getting a little better. We actually have been getting to skype almost everyday!

Back in Afghanistan (Update on Joe)

Joe sent me a few pictures in the middle of the night last night, only it was in the middle of the day in Afghanistan. The time difference is 12.5 hours. About the time all of us are waking up he is getting ready for bed, and when we start getting ready for bed he is waking up. The kids are missing daddy of course, but like me they love seeing all the pictures from daddy being away.

He is safe and healthy. He is happy to have all the amenities he has this time compared to his last two deployments. They have wifi in there rooms, a gym, and a rec center. Last weekend was my best friend's 26th birthday. The weekend started off having dinner at Tokyo Steakhouse and ended coming home from the Sycamore Hot Springs Resort. We had a blast and it was a much needed weekend. Of course before I left I called to make sure the hotel had Internet access just in case my hubby was able to contact me. Meanwhile, the kids were back at home! Yes, mommy had a whole night to herself! Roxy had a blast at Grandma and Grandpa Roseno's house! They went to church and out to lunch. I had a blast out of town but of course I talked about missing my kids and my husband the whole time.

Update on Joe:

He is doing well. I can't say much about where he is right now or what he is doing, just know he is safe and healthy. I have heard from him almost everyday but with everything he is doing right now he has been busy and I believe it will be that way until he finally is completely settled in. Thank you to everyone who has been praying for our family.

As many of you know Joe has finally left Wisconsin!!! I can honestly say he was happy to leave the snow. After so many days of freezing your butt off, well according to him, "it gets old!" The first picture was of the plane that took him away from that place. In the bottom two pictures Joe is with SSgt Shaw. Both these pictures were taken at there first stop on this journey... and yes, that is a final beer for the next year in the bottom picture! I hope it was good honey! We love you and miss you and will say multiple prayers for you and the rest of the 649th this year!

I think it would be great for a lot of people not involved in the military to also watch it due to its content. As many of you know, Joe has been at Fort McCoy training since the beginning of December. He is part of the 649th Engineer's getting ready for a deployment to Afghanistan. We were in Paradise for a Family BBQ and Yellow Ribbon Event for Joe's unit so on some of our down time we decided to take the kids to the bowling alley. It was Emily's first bowling trip and she had a blast. Roxy isn't really old enough to bowl yet but she had fun watching us play.

Family BBQ for the 649th Engineers

On September 18, 2010, the 649th Engineers had a family day BBQ at Degarmo Park in Chico. The kids had lots of activities to do and they received backpacks full of books, dvd's, coloring books, crayons, tissues, and many other items. Emily had a blast! She even got a lady bug painted on her face! It was a great day for all the families to get to know each other.

I know it's been a long time since I updated this thing but I Just realized I can do it from my phone. Between Joe's training schedule, the kids schedule's and mine it has been crazy around here. Joe just got back from 5 weeks in West Virginia and the kids and I couldn't be happier. I recently joined the FRG which stands for Family Readiness Group for those who don't know. Now I get to work more closely with the other people in Joe's unit and be more up to date on information. Next week we will be going to Chico for a bbq and briefs. Preparing for his deployment has been difficult but it has also been rewarding and has given us time to do things together as a family. Now that I know I can update the blog from my phone I hope to do it more often.

Yosemite with Richard, his wife (Natalie), and son (Richard Jr.). Richard is a friend of Joe's. They met in Marine Corps boot camp and have been friends ever since. We were lucky to receieve a phone call from Richard when he was on his way to Yosemite to ask if we would like to join. We had a great time! Our day even included a 6 mile hike with the kids! It was a ton of fun!!!

Well, today was Mother's Day and for us, it was also our first anniversary! We celebrated it last night, that way today could be more about Mother's Day. We had so much fun! It's been a long time since we've had a date night. First, we went to the movies and saw The Nightmare on Elm Street (romantic right?) LOL. It was something we both had been wanting to see. Then, once the movie was over Joe was surprising me with dinner. I had no idea where we were going. When we pulled up to T.G.I.Fridays I was feeling a little upset, however, I didn't say anything because I knew my husband was trying to do something nice for me. When we were almost to the door, and Joe could tell I was disappointed, he looked at me and said "ha, I'm just kidding come on babe do you really think we're having dinner at Fridays for our anniversary?" So I said "GOOD! Cause I was going to be really disappointed if we didn't have teppanyaki!" He just laughed but guess where he had made reservations...? Tokyo Steakhouse in Clovis! Man, does my husband know me or what! It was a really great time.

Oso De Oro Lake Park

Yesterday was Family Day at the park. We spent a few hours at Oso De Oro Lake Park with the kids. Emily was really excited to go swinging on the swings and Roxy was having a great time just sitting in the front of the stroller watching all the kids play.

After we were done playing we went on a long walk around the park until we came to the lake where all the ducks are. Emily noticed all the other kids were feeding the ducks so she decided she wanted to also. There was a nice couple with there grandchildren there so they let Emily have a few pieces of bread to throw out to the ducks. Once she started feeding them she realized I was throwing the bread over the rail so she wanted to also. Joe put her on his shoulders and they had a great time together feeding the ducks.
We were actually lucky enough to see a few turtles coming up from under the water to get a few bites of the bread also.

Today is such a beautiful day outside that when Emily and Roxy wake up from there nap we might head back to the park for round two of feeding the ducks. I'll try to get some more pictures of it.

On another note, Joe has some training coming up on May 23rd. He'll be gone for about 3 weeks so keep our family in your prayers. It is going to be a tough adjustment for the kids and I but right now, we are just taking it one day at a time.

Easter and Deployment Update

Happy Easter from The Medrano Family! We hope everyone had a great Easter! On Saturday we colored Easter eggs with Grandma Merrill. It was the first year Emily was really able to enjoy it and it was fun seeing her face light up with the changing color of every egg. Then Sunday morning we got up and went to church. The kids had fun in Sunday School, Emily made a cross and learned Easter is about Jesus rising from the dead, or as she would say it... "Jesus arose" After church, we went over to Papa Page's and Grandma Lori's house. Emily had fun hiding Easter eggs and getting any adult she could to find them with her. She also had fun putting the crown and jewelry the Easter bunny brought her on Papa. In fact, I think I have a picture! ....................................................................>

I loved watching Emily this Easter! It makes me wonder what this Christmas has in store for her. She now knows if she is good the Easter Bunny brings her candy, oh and a movie to share with her sister. He brought her Alice in Wonderland this year. We watched it as soon as she was done looking at her Easter basket! It was nice spending time with all the family and we can't wait for the next holiday to spend together.

On a side note: (Deployment Update)

As many of you know, Joe is deploying at the end of the year. I can't give many details due to OPSEC. That basically means, they don't want it all out on the internet. They need to keep our men and women in the armed forces as protected as they can. He started training for his deployment today. I took some pictures of us getting all his gear ready last night... so for the next 5 days he'll be in the field. Send him as many prayers as you can!

The Love Dare

I know it has been a long time since I have updated but let me just say, with 2 kids, a husband in the Army, working full time and going to school... lol it doesn't leave a lot of time for blogging. Recently, Joe started The Love Dare. If you have seen the movie Fireproof then you know what I am talking about. He keeps updates on his facebook if you want to check it out. We found out that he will be deploying this year and he is doing this to create another strength in our marriage. We loved when we read in the introduction of the book that it makes strong marriages stronger! I think it's neat because he is journaling every night about the book and when he leaves for his deployment he is going to give it to me. He is currently on day 5 so pray for our journey.

On another note, Roxy is 6 months old now. She is doing all the things a 6 month old should be doing and more. She says mama and dada already, and she already has some teeth sticking out! Everyday is something new with her and we are blessed to have her. Emily is still going to school at New Life Discovery School and she is so smart. She is getting better at saying the alphabet and counting. I can't believe next year she will be starting kindergarten.

Well, pray for our family. The journey through this next deployment is going to be a rough one but with all of your help and support I know our family will be able to get through it.

Getting ready for Christmas!

The morning started off with Emily reminding us it was time to put up our tree and lights like at Papa and Grandma's house. So after getting her to sleep as long as we could it was time to start! Daddy started getting all the Christmas stuff out while Emily and I made breakfast! We decided on Waffles.

After we ate our breakfast it was time to decorate the tree! Emily loved this. Above is a picture of her dancing while decorating! She had a blast.

The last thing to do with the tree was to put the star on top and of course, that is now Emily's job! She got up there on Daddy's shoulders and placed the star at the top of the tree!

Emily didn't want to leave Roxy out so she spent some time singing to her and holding her on the couch!

What to Expect Before Deployment
For anyone who has ever gone through a deployment, you probably have a set routine or list of things to expect. Many couples start to bicker more about little things that don't really matter. Some just start overwhelming themselves with chores and things to do that matter more than their spouse. Others try to spend as much time together as possible before the deployment. Whatever your style is, recognize that all of these strategies are normal and that every family should recognize and accept their own strategy.
Accept Your Husband's Enthusiasm to Deploy
Servicemembers train to deploy. That is their job. Training an entire lifetime and never getting to deploy is actually a nightmare for many, and not a perk of the job like many wives would think. It isn't uncommon for a servicememner to be excited to deploy. Don't be offended by this. It is important that your spouse leave happy and ready to do his job. If he isn't focused, not only will he have a bad deployment, but morale can plummet within the unit. If your spouse's job is in combat, they need to be focused, need to be excited, and cannot afford to have an angry family back home. Your enthusiasm is just as important as his enthusiasm for the unit.
Acknowledging Your Own Feelings Before Deployment
It is ok to be mad, just make sure you're being productive with your feelings and find positive outlets for those feelings. There are many resources to deal with your emotions. You can talk to other wives who have been there before, you can talk to your FRG leadership, or your Ombudsman. There are also great counseling resources on base or out in town in any military community that are aware of the stressors of being a military wife.

Halloween 2009

Halloween was so much fun this year. Emily had fun going up to the door at every house with a light on. She made sure to ask every person that answered the door for a candy for her, one for her sister and one for her cousin Vincent.

Emily loves Vincent! She is a great big sister and is also turning out to be a great older cousin. The reason she was a dinosaur for halloween this year was because when I asked what she wanted to be she told me T-Rex... lol... and T-Rex is what she got to be!

Here are a few pictures from the Pumpkin Carving Party. Believe it or not, this was the first time Joe carved pumpkins. Above is a picture of him carving a pumpkin that took him about 2 hours to carve.

Roxy was a great highlight of the night. Everyone enjoyed seeing her in her little pumpkin outfit with her hat. She is such a good baby, once she fell asleep she borrowed Vincents bouncer and was out for the night!

For My Military Wife Friends:

While I have never had the pleasure of meeting you or your husband, I felt the need to write you and express a very deep feeling that I have in my heart.

I, as a person, am not brave. I do not tackle things head on, as I hate confrontation. I will travel 100 miles out of my way just to avoid a conflict. I am an American woman that has no idea what is going on in the military other than what I hear on the news.

I have never had to let go of someone so that they could go fight for people that they didn't know, people that sometimes do not appreciate or understand what they are fighting for.I have never had a sleepless night of worry because of a report that another bomb has exploded and I still haven't heard from my husband.

I have never had to wait for months on end to hold the one that I loved so.I have never had to tell my children that daddy wasn't coming home tonight because he was so far away fighting for something that they aren't yet old enough to understand.

I have never had to hold my head high and suppress the tears as I hear that it will be at least another six months of separation before my loved one gets to come home.I have never had to deal with a holiday away from the one that I thought I would share every day of my life with.And I have never had to feel the panic rising in my heart at the sound of a ringing phone or knock at the door for fear that it is the news that everyone is terrified of getting.

For the reasons listed above, I can not tell you that I understand how you feel. I can not tell you that you must be strong. I can not say that you shouldn't be angry, because you "knew what you were getting into when you married a military man". I can not say these things because I have never had to walk in your shoes.

What I can say for certain is that because of your unselfish acts of bravery and your husbands willingness to stand up for those who see him as "just another soldier" - - I will never have to walk in your shoes.

I do understand that as a military wife you are expected to uphold a certain amount of control, but I never understood how you could do it, until now. I have figured out that you are not like other women. You are of a special breed. You have a strength within you that holds life together in the darkest of hours, a strength of which I will never possess. The faith you have is what makes you stand out in a crowd; it makes you glow with emotion and swell with pride at the mention of The United States of America.

You are a special lady, a wonderful partner and a glorious American.I have more respect for your husband than I could ever tell you, but until recently I never thought much about those that the soldier leaves at home during deployment.Until this moment I could never put into words exactly what America meant to me.Until this moment, I had no real reason to.... Until I heard of you.

Your husband and his military family hold this nation close, safe from those who wish to hurt us...but you and those like you are the backbone of the American family. You keep the wheels in motion and the hearts alive while most would just break completely down. Military families make this nation what it is today.You give us all hope and you emit a warming light at the end of a long dark tunnel.Because of you and your family...I am able to be me. I am able to have my family. I am able to walk free in this great land. Because of you and your family, I can look ahead to the future with the knowledge that life is going to be okay. Because of you and your family, I can awake to a new day, everyday.

I realize that you are a stronger person than I will ever be because of these things and I just wanted to take the time today to say thank you to you and your family for allowing me that freedom.I will never be able to repay this debt to you, as it is unmatchable. However, I hope that you know that no matter where you are...what you are doing...what has happened today...or what will happen tomorrow...Your husband will NEVER be "just another soldier" to me.... And you, dear sweet lady, will never be forgotten.You are all in my prayer's everyday and I pray that God will bring you back together with your loved one safely.

As I sit here thinking back to the events that happened 8 years ago today, I can't help but be so proud of my husband and the sacrifices he has made to be part of a greater purpose. Over the 4 1/2 years he spent in the Marine Corps he spent 16 months deployed overseas in combat zones. His first deployment was in Iraq and the second in Afghanistan. Next year, he will be returning to Iraq with the Army. After finishing his contract in Feb. with the Marines he joined the Army National Guard with another 6 year contract. Dear Lord, Give me the greatness of heart to see the difference between duty and his love for me. Give me understanding that I may know, when duty calls him he must go. Give me a task to do each day, to fill the time when he's away. And Lord, when he's in a foreign land, keep him safe in your loving hand. And Lord, when duty is in the field, please protect him and be his shield. And Lord, when deployment is so long, please stay with me and keep me strong. Amen." So here is to you Joe, you make me proud to be your wife and although I know our lives together have more sacrifices and time apart then what a "normal" relationship should contain I wouldn't change our lives together for anything. We have a beautiful family, and I think the kids and I are so lucky to have you. You know the true meaning of giving yourself for a higher cause and I can only hope our children get your courage and determination. I love you with all that I am and I am proud to be your wife!

Today was the Baby Shower for Roxanne Ray Medrano! Emily had such a great time opening gifts for her sister! We had cake and played games. It was a really great time. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it. We really appreciate sharing this special day with you. Sorry we missed the ones that were unable to make it. We are getting so excited to bring Roxy home! We can't wait to meet her. Emily will fight with Joe saying Roxy is "HERS!"

The baby stuff is all working together so nicely. We have so many of the things that we need now! We just have to pick up some odds and ends and everything will be set!
